This is somewhat similar to a croissant made with some type of puff pastry, very buttery, but with one or two pieces of dark chocolate in the center.
A classic French viennoiserie.
This phrase literally translates into chocolate bread.
That's what it means in French.
How do you go about pronouncing it?
Pain, which means bread.
Au chocolat. Chocolat being French for chocolate, of course.
Pain au chocolat. Pain au chocolat.
In the southwestern part of France, those are called chocolatines and it's the same in Canada, I believe.
